Last night the Barrie Colts faced off against the Ottawa 67’s for the first game of the 2017-18 regular season.
“The Russian Line”, as well as the rest of the Ponies came out galloping and were able to dominate Ottawa by a score of 11-2. Nathan Allensen would score the Colts first of the season and his first career OHL goal. He would go on to get 3 points.
Justin Murray would score shortly after on the teams fourth shot of the night. Less than two minutes later, this would happen.

1st overall pick at the CHL Import Draft, Andrei Svechnikov would score a beautiful goal to give the Colts the 3-0 lead. Both Alexey Lipanov and Kirill Nizhnikov both assisted on the goal and this would be the first of many highlights on the night for that line.
Luke Bignell and 1st overall draft pick, Ryan Suzuki would also score their first career OHL goals.
Here is a look at the teams point production on the night.
Kirill Nizhnikov: 4 assists and named 1st star.
Curtis Douglas: 2 goals, 1 assist, +5 and named 2nd star.
Jaden Peca: 3 assists, +6 and named 3rd star.
Nathan Allensen: 1 goal, 2 assists, +5.
Andrei Svechnikov: 2 goals.
Ryan Suzuki: 1 goal, 1 assist.
Lucas Chiodo:1 goal, 1 assist.
Justin Murray: 1 goal, 1 assist, +4.
Jason Willms: 1 goal, 1 assist.
Zach Magwood: 1 goal.
Luke Bignell: 1 goal, +5.
Ben Hawerchuk: 1 assist.
Alexey Lipanov: 1 assist, 6 for 13 faceoffs won.
Joey Keane: 1 assist.
Leo Lazarev was recently acquired from Ottawa and managed to make 20 saves in the win. He wasn’t busy but he managed to look calm all night, even when the Colts were responsible for his first goal against on a goal that went off Allensen.
Barrie couldn’t score on their lone power play opportunity and managed to only allow 1 goal against on 4 penalty kills. They out-shot Ottawa 37 to 22. An area they will need to improve will be face-offs. Ottawa won 41 of 61. Obviously didn’t hurt the team tonight, but moving forward it could be an issue against stronger teams.
The team heads to North Bay to take on the Battalion Friday night. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:00 at North Bay Memorial Gardens.
