Leo Lazarev got the start in goal for the second time of the season.
1st Period:
Soo came out strong in the 1st period getting a few good chances but Lazarev was able to hold the fort. Christopher Cameron who was playing in his season debut would take an early Interference call, which the Ponies would kill off.
10:06 into the 1st, Jason Willms would take a hooking call, but it would be the Colts striking on the penalty kill when Alexey Lipanov, who signed with the Tampa Bay Lightening would score short handed. The goal was his 1st of his OHL career. Both Andrei Svechnikov and Justin Murray, who was named captain earlier that night would add assists.
Late in the period, Cameron would take his second penalty of the night and Barrett Hayton would make the Colts pay, tying the game 1-1 with just over a minute remaining in the period.
Soo outshot the Colts 14 to 8 in the period. The Hounds had a strong period but solid goaltending from Leo Lazarev would keep the Colts in the game.
2nd period:
Barrie got their own chances with the man advantage to start the 2nd period off. The second one came on a bad hit by Noah Carroll on Justin Murray. He was called for Blindsiding. Joey Keane would score his 1st of the season to put Barrie up 2-1. Ryan Suzuki and Alexey Lipanov both were credited with assists.
For the last 7 minutes of the period, Barrie would not register a shot on goal, while the Soo got some good chances, but again, Lazarev stood tall and kept the Ponies in front.
Colts had a stronger frame and tied Soo 11-11 in shots in the 2nd. Lazarev had 24 saves at this point.
3rd Period:
Soo came out with an early goal. Ryan Roth scored his 1st of the season just under a minute in the period to tie the game 2-2.
The period was very back and forth with each side dominating back and forth. 12:39 mark would see Soo get their first lead of the game on a Tim Gettinger goal. The goal was his 3rd of the season. .
Hayden Verbeek would take a bad, late call for cross-checking with less than two minutes in regulation and the Colts would make him pay on a Lucas Chiodo goal. The goal was his 2nd on the year and both Lipanov and Suzuki added assists.
Barrie out-shot the Soo 9-8 in the period and managed to force overtime.
Overtime:
Colts came out fast and would score the game-winner on a Zachary Magwood redirect goalon a Joey Keane shot. Keane and Justin Murray both got assists on the game winner. The goal was Magwood’s 2nd on the campaign.
Thoughts:
Special teams were huge for Barrie, going 3 for 6 on the man advantage, while allowing a singe goal over 3 penalty kills. They were only out-shot 33 to 30, which was decent considering they came out slow in the 1st period.
Again, the team managed to do a good job in the face-off circle, wining almost 50% of the draws. An area where the team will need to improve is managing the puck in their end. They made a few bad turnovers which resulted in goals. Ryan Suzuki alone made a couple, one that resulted in a 3 on 1 that Lazarev would save and another that resulted in a goal. If they can find a way to not rush the puck out, they could have eliminated some good chances for the Soo.
Leo Lazarev was outstanding, making 30 saves.
Here is a look at the teams point production on the night.
Alexey Lipanov: 1 goal, 2 assists.
Joey Keane: 1 goal, 1 assist.
Ryan Suzuki: 2 assists.
Justin Murray: 2 assists.
Zachary Magwood: 1 goal.
Andrei Svechnikov: 1 assist.
Lucas Chiodo: 1 assist.
