Billy Smith hired as Colts new Director of Goaltending. #OHL

The Barrie Colts announced that they have hired former NHL goaltender Billy Smith as their director of goaltending.

In 1969-70, Smith played in the QMJHL as a member of the Cornwall Royals. He would play in 56 games where he would post a 4.47 GAA and a .887 SAV%. He would go on to get drafted by the Los Angeles Kings 59th overall. He spent that season with the Springfield Kings where the team would go on to win the Calder Cup.

Smith spent the better part of 18 seasons in the NHL. After his season in Los Angeles he would go on to get selected in the 1972 expansion draft by the New York Islanders. There he would spend the rest of his playing career through to the 1988-89 season.

On December, 28th, 1979 Billy Smith scored a goal. His team would still go on to lose the game to the Calorado Rockies. Though the goal was put in the net by a member of the Rockies, after the game it was decided after viewing the replay that Smith was the last Islanders player to touch the puck and was credited with the goal.

Smith would help the team win 4 Stanley Cups in 79-80, 80-81, 81-82 and 82-83. In 1981-82 he would win the Vezina Trophy and in 1982-83 he would win the Jennings and Conn Smythe Trophy. After his playing career, he would go on to be the Islanders goaltending coach for 4 seasons before taking that same position with the Florida Panthers for 5 seasons.

In 1993-94 he would get added to the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame.

In 1998-99 he would be named the Panthers Assistant Coach before returning to Long Island as goaltending coach from 2001 to 2003.

Smith is also a member of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' list.
